Ms. Rose Mathews
Sixth and Seventh Grade - Welcome Letter
To my 6th and 7th Grade Learners and Families,
Welcome to another year of excitement and learning at St. John of God School! I appreciate your dedication and support of Catholic Education for both your students and families. My name is Miss Rose Mathews and I am proud to be returning to junior high as the 6th and 7th Grade homeroom teacher as well as the Social Studies and English Language Arts Teacher for Grades 6-8 for the 2016-2017 School Year.
This will be my third year of teaching at St. John of God School. I am a proud graduate and alumni of St. John of God (℅ 2003). My family have been members of the school and parish community for over 20 years so Charger pride runs deep in my veins. After graduating as the Salutatorian and Student Council Religion Commissioner in 2003 I went on to St. Paul High School. In 2011 I graduated cum laude from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and Theatre Arts. Currently, I am in my last semester of Graduate School at LMU working on my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education and California Teaching Credential in English. I have been fascinated with Literature and History/Social Studies since my time at SJOG and love sharing my passion for these subjects with my students. I consider myself a LIFELONG LEARNER!!! I am not only your teacher, but a student and hope to give you a love of learning as well through our year together.
In addition to being a junior high teacher I am also the Drama Director and Student Council Advisor here at St. John of God School. I have been involved in the Drama program for nine years now both as a student and in leadership roles. I believe that “Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances” and am proud to continue the 26 year tradition of Theatre at St. John of God. After college I worked for the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim as a Cast Member for three years in the Youth Education Series Program (Y.E.S.) teaching leadership seminars to six grade students and older. Due to my experience I was asked to continue as advisor for our 2016-2017 Student Council. I look forward to guiding our student leaders through the year as they serve our school community.
I believe that learning and education is a collaborative process between the student, teacher, administration and parents. We are all responsible for the learning environment of our students. Sixth graders are finally starting junior high and moving to the front building. This is a time of transition where they will learn how to be a more independent and responsible student. It is quite a learning curve but they will get through it. Seventh grade is a time of change and growth, but students will navigate through these challenges and they will be given the tools they need to succeed. This will be a fun and exciting year together.
I encourage all parents and students to contact me any time they have a question or concern. Feel free to email me with questions or to schedule conferences when needed. I will respond to most emails within 24 hours. I also run and maintain a class website where I will post announcements, reminders, important links, and resources. Feel free to check it frequently to see what your students are learning in the classroom.
I am excited and ready for a new school year. Welcome to Room 7!
