Ms. Rose Mathews
Firth, Sixth and Seventh Grade - Welcome Letter
August 21, 2017
To my Junior High (Grades 5-8) Learners and Families,
Welcome to another year of excitement and learning at St. John of God School! I appreciate your dedication and support of Catholic Education for both your students and families. My name is Miss Rose Mathews and I am proud to be returning to St. John of God School as the Social Studies and English Language Arts Teacher for Grades 5-8 for the 2017-2018 School Year. I will also be the homeroom teacher for our B Group of students this year.
This will be my fourth year of teaching at St. John of God School. I am a proud graduate and alumni of St. John of God (℅ 2003). My family have been members of the school and parish community for over 20 years so Charger pride runs deep in my veins. After graduating as the Salutatorian and Student Council Religion Commissioner in 2003, I went on to St. Paul High School (‘07). In 2011, I graduated cum laude from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and Theatre Arts. This past May I graduated from LMU a second time, completing the CAST program and earning my Masters Degree in Secondary Education and my Preliminary California Teaching Credential in English. I have been fascinated with Literature and History since my time at SJOG and love sharing my passion for these subjects with my students. I consider myself a LIFELONG LEARNER!!! I am not only your teacher, I am a student, and hope to give you the same love of learning I have throughout our year together.
In addition to being a junior high teacher, I am the Drama Director and Student Council Advisor here at St. John of God School. I have been involved in the Drama program for ten years now both as a student and in leadership roles. I believe that “Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances” and am proud to continue the 27 year tradition of Theatre at St. John of God. After college I worked for the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim as a Cast Member for three years in the Youth Education Series Program (Y.E.S.) teaching leadership seminars to sixth grade students and older. Due to my experience I was asked to continue as advisor for our 2017-2018 Student Council. I look forward to guiding our student leaders through the year as they serve our school community.
I believe that learning and education is a collaborative process between the student, teacher, administration and parents. We are all responsible for the learning environment of our students. Junior High is where students begin to learn how to be accountable for their learning. This is a time of transition where they will learn how to be more independent and responsible students. This is a time of change and growth, but students will navigate through these challenges and they will be given the tools they need to succeed. I teach with the goal for all of my students to be successful in high school and gradually college. This will be a fun and exciting year together.
I encourage all parents and students to contact me any time they have a question or concern. Feel free to email me with questions or to schedule conferences when needed. I will respond to most emails within 24 hours. I also run and maintain a class website where I will post announcements, reminders, important links, and resources. Feel free to check it frequently to see what your students are learning in the classroom.
I am excited and ready for a new school year. Welcome to Room 7!
